Traditionally dentistry has stifled its auxiliaries, making dental hygiene a burn-out profession and dental assisting boring. Some propose great expansion of auxiliary responsibility, from hygienists providing local anesthesia to assistants filling prepared teeth. Many in organized dentistry have campaigned against expanded duties as a first step to autonomous hygiene practice or as a greater boon to managed care practices than fee for service practices. Can we responsibly legislate expanded duties in such a way as to benefit our patients and auxiliaries without placing a new weapon in the hands of those who could and would abuse them?
